Member benefits
Members gain a number of benefits as a result of their membership: any members who turn up to meetings are entitled to free paper copies of our journal, Anor, and membership also brings with it a number of discounts on society events. Members can also access the society's library, which is a borrowing library in Cambridge that has copies of the vast majority of Tolkien's books as well as a number of other publication on Tolkien's life and works. The regular food and drink at society meetings is also funded this way; we have no regular sources of income other than membership and any surplus on events, so memberships are vital for the society to continue functioning.
External members
Whilst many of the member benefits involve doing things in Cambridge, we're nonetheless very happy to accept members from further afield, especially those who want to support our aims of promoting and supporting studies of Tolkien's work. Our journal is increasingly an international, open-access publication, which is also available from the major UK copyright libraries, and membership can help us support the cost of that. The website is also rapidly becoming a major resource base for those wishing to set up or run other Tolkien societies, with details and ideas of activities and quizzes people can do. For members who can't physically get to meetings, we're happy for people to join via Skype where that's available. We also run an external mailing list for members from further afield, to give regular updates on the society's activities, notify people when new copies of Anor are released, and also invite people to a few of the more major social events of the year.
How to pay
The easiest way to join is to just turn up to any CTS event and pay Smaug (the treasurer) or another committee member. Membership can be paid in cash, British Cheque or International Money Order in Sterling only; please do not send cash in the post. Cheques etc. are payable to The Cambridge Tolkien Society. We can also accept bank transfers, and are very happy to send out the relevant details to anyone wishing to join from outside the Cambridge area.
For further details, contact Smaug or another member of the committee.
