- Elvish
Mae govannen everyone!
For those of you who don't know me, I'm Philippa the Elvish Officer, who
shall be attempting to teach some people a bit of Elvish this year. I only
really know Sindarin (and I'm still a learner!), so that's what I'll be
focussing on.
This e-mail is just to introduce myself and let you know that I shall
announce the first Elvish Class and its venue soon (it should be about
Tourist Sindarin), so look out for that e-mail.
I also want you to know how you can contact me, if you have any ideas or
suggestions about the Elvish Classes - new input is always appreciated.
I hope to see at least some of you soon, and to all those of you who are
new - welcome!
Hannon le a navaer!

The Eagle Debate will be held at 8:30 this Tuesday in Peile 304, Newnham.
All the Fellowship are riding on an eagle towards Mount Doom, but the eagle
is getting tired. Who should be thrown off first? Come along and defend
your favorite character or just to watch!
Directions: On entering Newnham p'lodge, turn right and follow the very
long corridor (for those of you who came to the squash - it was also held
in Peile). Eventually you'll get to a tiled corridor with a mirror on the
corner at the end of it, go round the corner and at the end of the corridor
there's a set of doors with 'Peile Hall' above them. Go through them and
keep following the corridor. Go all the way up the main staircase (on your
right), at the top, diagonally in front of you is another set of stairs, go
up these as well. At the top of the stairs, turn right - Peile 304 is on
the left!

- Missive: Eagle Debate Write Up
Greetings one and all,
As some of you probably already know, I'm the one that has been gently
persuaded to try a hand at editing Anor this time round. For those of you
at the Eagle Debate yesterday, I was the one playing Samwise (again :-] )
That should let you put a face to me in most cases.
Staying with a theme; could those of you who participated in the debate
send me an email, telling me in as much detail as you can (for we all know
that memory can be a finicky thing at the best of times) who you were
(middle-earth and real name), what your arguments were in each round, and
which round you were thrown off in. I would also like to know your 'famous
last words' before you were hurled to your doom... which did not, in all
cases, involve a startling resemblance to a *feather floating to the
ground*...
To those of you who spectated, lend me your ears also: send me your
comments and recollections anyway - every little will help the write up!
Expect to hear pestiferous whinings in your inboxes soon about wanting
articles for Anor. You have been warned.

- Missive: Halloween Party/Elvish Squash
Hello everyone!
Just to let you know the details of my Halloween party.
Friday 31st October, 7pm
Venue: 427 Keynes, King's
No dress code - come as you are, or dress up if you want to!
I'd also like to treat the night as a bit of an informal Elvish Squash, so
those of you who would like to do some Elvish this year (it's not demanding
though!) can come and meet me properly, and I can get to know you a bit.
Now, I *know* my room is on the small side, but it's big enough for us to
hang around and have a drink, and then we can move on - possibly to another
party that I know is happening, or maybe to King's bar/Corpus for
celebrations.
Please can you let me know individually if you can come, as soon as
possible - I need to think about what food/drinks to get in, etc.
Thanx, and I hope you can come along!
Navaer,
Philippa
The Elvish Officer
pms45
------------------------------------------------
Directions: Enter King's by the main gate and turn left. When you get to
some steps, go up them and through the double door into the bar. Turn right
and head through the bar and out the other side. There should be a stone
staircase on your left, but don't take it - carry on forward until a
corridor stretches off to your left and turn into it. At the end is a door,
and through it a staircase - go up 4 floors, turn 180 degrees from the top
of the stairs (as you stand having come up them), and go through the single
door. Turn left into the corridor, go right along until you're past 426,
and then take a little left turn into a small corridor, at the end of which
is my room. Easy!
Please don't ask the porters for directions - if you'll need directions on
the night, e-mail me and I'll give you my mobile number, then you can call
me when you get lost :)

- Missive: What if?
This week's meeting will be held at 8:30 on Tuesday in E18 New Hall.
What if the fellowship never went through Moria? Which way would they go?
Why would they do this? Would the ring ever be destroyed? Come along and
have your say and watch the history and fate of Middle Earth change before
your eyes....
Directions: Enter the New Hall p'lodge and follow the corridor forwards.
There will be pidgeon holes all along the right hand side; at the end of
these there is a door on the right. Go through this (you'll know its the
right door when you see the photocopiers straight on your left). Follow the
corridor round; you'll go through many large and awkward firedoors, past
staircases. Eachj staircase had a letter (B, C, D, etc.) Keep going until
you reach 'E' staircase (this will take a few minutes). Go up as far as the
stairs will go, and turn left in the corridor at the top. E18 is the second
door on your right. It will be obvious that it is the home of Tolkien
maniacs for reasons that will become apparent upon arrival...
Hope to see everyone there!

- Anor
You knew it was coming sooner or later... Here's a promised pestiferous
email.
Anor is the journal of the Cambridge Tolkien Society - and we want to pick
your brains. 'For what?' I hear you cry. Well, here's the blurb from the
website, followed by blurb of my own...
Contributions come from members, former members and other interested
parties, and include: reviews of Tolkien-related books and general fantasy
genre fiction; critical analyses of primary works; reports of society
events and external events of interest (national TS meetings, conventions
etc.) and occasional original poetry or fiction. The editor welcomes all
submissions, which will be considered for inclusion, whatever the source.
Articles should be of general interest to the readership.
What does it mean? If you can draw, draw, if you can write, write, and if
you can be generally silly, then be generally silly.
Maybe you feel like drawing ringwraiths on the back of small pieces of
paper, or maybe you've been reading LOTR and have been struck by the
significance of dreams in it, or have noted a light-illuminating thread in
one of the characters that you'd like to share, a significant quote that
opens up the whole plot.
Maybe you've read Roverandom or the Father Christmas letters and love it so
much you'd love to report on it and wouldn't writing on the Father
Christmas Letters be timely as we get towards that unmentionable time of
year).
Or perhaps you've opinions on the film adaptations (either good or bad)
that you'd like to air.
Whatever it is, get scribbling!
If you've a vague idea but aren't sure whether or not it's a good one, drop
me an email and run it by me. Your thoughts alone are sure to be welcome!
Send your submissions by email, or drop them in my pidgeon hole if you're
in the New Hall vicinity (A.E. Slack, on the right in the p'lodge).
I look forward to hearing from many of you soon,
Anna

- Re: BBC Big Read
As many of you already know, we are planning to do a full length
dramatisation of the Lord of the Rings next year.
As a preamble to this, we're producing a short comedy made up of a number
of sketches about Lord of the Rings. This will be performed in the week
after the end of term.
The BBC have expressed an interest in filming this for the Big Read, and we
are working hard to make this come off.
There are a number of different parts available for a range of different
acting abilities. If you would like to be involved, we are planning to cast
it at the next meeting (the Games Night).
If you can't make it, contact me and I'll try and sort something out.
If you think that acting isn't where your talents are best directed, but
you want to be involved, we're looking for someone to deal with costumes
and props, either come and see me next Tuesday, or email me!

Hello each once again,
This is just to let you know that the deadline for Anor submissions is
Sunday 23rd November (that's just after the Foreyule Feast). This is so
that I can attempt to get the thing put together and out to you all by the
end of term.
But, of course, this still leaves you plenty of time to scribble some stuff
and send it to me - and anything that misses the deadline for this term
will likely be stashed away for next time. So keep your Anor-hats on, and
send me what you come up with. :-)

- Anor stuff (again)
Hello each,
There's been a thought for a new page-filler in Anor; that is, a question
gets sent to the Society, and folk feed back on it. As many thoughts on
said question are put into Anor for the delectation and delight of the
reader. One of the questions is for character assassination purposes, the
other for general silliness, if that follows.
Simply; all you have to do is answer me, in as many or as few words as you
like, these two questions;
Question 1: Should lembas be a controlled substance - energy-inducing
effects, suppresses appetite, addictively pleasant taste; surely this isn't
good?
Question 2: Character Assassination; What kind of hero is Frodo, anyway?
Send me your thoughts on Frodo and Lembas, and between us we'll fill
another page of Anor. Anyone who would like to submit questions for next
time is also welcome to do so.
Remember, the deadline is creeping up for submissions generally (you've got
about a week left), so if you've ideas and stuff for issue 30, let me know
asap. :-)
Thanks to each,

- Missive: The sentience of the ring debate
The debate will be held at 8:30 on Tuesday in Peile 304 Newnham.
Is the ring evil, or does it merely bring out evil in others? What
difference does this make? Come and give us your opinion.
Directions: Enter Newnham's plodge, turn right and walk down the *very*
long corridor. This will take about 5 minutes. Eventually, you'll get to a
set of double doors with 'Peile Hall' above it. Go through them, and keep
going down the corridor. Go all the way up the main staircase. At the top,
go up the stairs diagonally in front of you. At the top of the stairs, turn
right down the corridor, Peile 304 is on your left.

- Christmas Party with Elvish
Mae govannen everyone,
Just to announce that I'm having a
*Saturnalia Party*
8pm, Friday 28th November
427 Keynes, King's
This will involve talking about Elvish, getting some ideas, etc - so please
come, Elvish people. I know Saturnalia is a Roman thing (I'm a Classicist),
and some of my Classics friends will be there, but this is for you guys too
:)
Though costume has been suggested, it isn't compulsory (I doubt I can get
anything together myself by then - maybe I'll have a proper toga party next
term). The plan, as always, is to sit around and eat and drink, whilst
enjoying intellectual or otherwise conversation.
As requested, please find *no Latin whatsoever* in this e-mail (well,
except Saturnalia, but that's a proper name. I mean, my name's Greek and
I'm going to put it at the end of the e-mail).
Please bring people, friends, slaves, or whatever. And please let me know
if you can make it - I need to know numbers (so even if you said you were
coming, could you still e-mail me?).
Hope you can come!

Directions: Enter King's by main gate, turn left, go through double door to
bar, turn right, head through, come out by stone staircase but don't go up
it, go on a bit to corridor on left, go along it, through door, up 4
flights of stairs, turn round to your right from top of stairs, go through
door, go left along corridor, go past 426 and take a little left turn into
my corridor and 427 is at the end. Easy.

- LOTR Exhibition
Dear all,
For those who are a)hanging about after the end of term (full term ends=20
December 5th) and b) wondering how to fill up one of those days before=20
returning to whichever Shires you hail from, here is a thought...
You're probably all very much aware of the Lord of the Rings film=20
exhibition going on in the London Science Museum at the moment. Myself and=
=20
a few friends are intending to sneak down on Tuesday 9th December to have a=
=20
good look round. Although this is not an official Tolkien Society excursion=
=20
(so you'll have to book your own tickets), any of you who would like to=20
join us (we'll meet at Cambridge Station, journey down en masse, do the=20
exhibition, and return) would be more than welcome.
When you book tickets you have to go in for a certain time-slot. My party=
=20
are thinking of grabbing the 2.30 slot, meaning a not too early start from=
=20
Cambridge.
For those with an interest; we lucky people appear to be able to get a=20
student discount on the tickets which means that these would cost =A36.95 f=
or=20
the exhibition, and another =A31 for the booking online fee thing. The trai=
n=20
down to London (including the tube) with a student railcard is in the=20
region of =A311.
So, anyone wanting a few Tolkienian travelling companions for the journey=
=20
there and back again, let me know, and we shall wait for you at the=20
station. I shall email with the time of departure closer to the day.
Best wishes to all, Anna Slack Editor of Anor, Secretary of the=20
sub-Committee. Couldn't decide which one to use :)

The Shire, sub-committee of the CTS are organising a few Lord of the Rings
related sketches which will be performed at the end of term. They should be
good fun (and there is a chance that the BBC might be interested in filming
them), a good end to the term. It would be really great if as many people
as possible could come and see them!
The performance will be at 3:30 on 7th December. It will be in the Old Labs
at Newnham.
Directions: From Newnham p'lodge take the door diagonally in front of you
(to the right), this will take you outside. Follow the path, the Old Labs
are a small(ish) brick building in the garden, there are signs!

A big thank you to everyone who has contributed to Anor this term - your

important task - being read.
In the meantime, you have all Christmas to think up and scribble new ideas,

- Missive: Elrond through the ages
This week's debate will be held this Tuesday at 8:30 in E18 New Hall.
The debate is an opportunity for the society to trace Elrond's character
development through the various books in which he appears.
Directions:
Enter the New Hall p'lodge and follow the corridor forwards.

Anor 30 is now in print, and although it was my intent to distribute it at

My new cunning wholesale distribution plan is to hand them out at the

Hello each,
Item 1: To those that contributed to Anor 30: You may be interested to know
that I today deposited a copy in the Cambridge University Library, no less,
so you have now all been immortalised forever. :-)
Item 2: Back issues of Anor are held in the UL, but they have many, many
missing. I wanted to ask around and see if any of you possessed any of
these issues so that I could photocopy them and put them into the UL for
our records.
Item 3: Anyone wanting to look at Anors in the UL needs to go and talk to
the Periodicals desk, just for future reference.
Item 4: Get scribbling and drawing and stuff over the holidays - and don't
hesitate to send me anything you think of for Anor 31 :-)
Best wishes to all, have a fantastic vacation and very merry Christmas,

- LotR Charity Read Through
Greetings one and each,
In the last few days, the Shire had a reply from the Tolkien Estate, giving
us the final piece of copyright permission that we require to go ahead with
a read-through of the BBC Radio Adaptation of Lord of the Rings. This will
likely take place in the Easter term.
The purpose of this missive is to enquire whether any of you have a
particular interest in playing a particular character (bearing in mind that
there are so many that most folk will need to play several). This will not
require line learning, and no acting (except in voices, of course), just a
willingness to participate will be enough :-)
So, if any of you have a love of any particular character, from Aragorn to
Barliman, the Mouth of Sauron to Wormtongue, or whether you'd just like to
be given anything we feel appropriate, drop me an email, and let me know. I
look forward to hearing from those of you that are interested!
Christmas wishes to all,

Greetings to each!
I hope you have all had restful holidays and are now enjoying the rainy
delights of Cambridge in the new year.
As you may have gathered from the title of the email, I'm on the hunt once
again for things to put in the pages of Anor 31. Essays, articles,
drawings, photos, silliness, poetry, prose...
If you've one of these or anything else that you can think of, I'd love to
hear from you. It would be great to make Anor 31 as filled as was its
predecessor.
If anyone has not yet received their copy of Anor 30, which went to press
in the last week of last term, I still have a few left; let me know that
you want one and then come along to a meeting to claim it.
If there are any queries about anything Anor-related, feel free to email me.
I look forward to hearing from many of you :)

Hello everyone,
I just want to let you know that there will definitely be some Elvish
classes this term - the first should be on Friday 23rd, but this will be
confirmed soon. The classes are for anyone who's interested in the language
(Sindarin, that is) - we'll probably start with general things,
pronunciation, getting you speaking a few bits, etc. I do hope some of you
will be able to make it.
Also, I'd just like to say that, if anyone has any Elvish queries, you're
very welcome to address them to me (though I can't *promise* to know the

- Update - Charity Reading of the Radio Adaptation
Greetings one and each,
This email is intended to fill in those of you who are interested in being
involved in the reading of the BBC Radio Adaptation of Lord of the Rings
that the Sub-committee is organising for charity.
If you have already expressed an interest and emailed me, you'll find
information about auditions and the like here.
If you would like to be involved, whether in voice, admin, sound, or
something else, and haven't emailed, it's not too late! This email will
provide you with all you need to know.
Either way, read on! There'll be a lot of information here, but hopefully
it will make sense.
WHAT WE'RE DOING: We will be reading the entire radio version of the Lord
of the Rings (which will take at least 13 hours). WHY: We intend to raise
money, either through sponsorship, donation, or a bit of both, to give to
the National Trust - a charity we feel Tolkien would have approved of were
he still with us. WHEN: The date at the moment that we have set is SATURDAY
JUNE 19th, 2004. This is the saturday after May week and just after the end
of next term. If you want to be involved, you need to keep this day
completely free of other commitments. WHERE: We will be performing the
reading in Borders Cambridge, on the third floor, microphones and coffee
provided.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:
We're looking for several types of people, and the most important thing in
all cases will be enthusiasm;
VOICES: Many people will have several minor characters to do, and these
will need to be able to do different voices. Others will have one major
characer to do. Whatever you get cast with, you will play that character
FOR THE DURATION. We would like to keep fairly close to the character
interpretation offered by the radio version, so it would be great if you
were familiar with it. But if you're not that doesn't pose a problem. There
will be NO LEARNING OF LINES involved, but we will need you to be
acquainted enough with your parts that you can read it fluently. We will
also require a lot of time and enthusiasm from you - see audition details
below.
ADMIN: We will need a small team of dedicated people to ensure that
everything runs smoothly on the day. This team will be vital to the
reading's success. These are the folk who will call up missing voices and
stand in if a voice doesn't appear on time.
SOUND: We will need two or three people, possibly working in shifts, to be
in charge of the sound effects, music, and so forth on the day.
AUDITIONS:
There will be two audition sessions. We would love to see you at one or
both of them. (You needn't know exactly what character you would like to
play, just come along and try something out.) You will be asked to read
something from the book, as the scripts are still in transit. If you'd care
to come prepared with a copy of LOTR that would likely be helpful, but
don't worry if you can't.
The first will be on TUESDAY 20th JANUARY, just prior to the Society
meeting. It will begin at 7pm in the Music Room, New Hall. An email with
directions will be sent a little closer to the time. We would love to see
as many of you as possible there.
The second meeting will be on SUNDAY FEBRUARY 1st, place and time to be
confirmed, although it is likely to be late afternoon or early evening.
At both meetings we will outline a little more of the plan.
If you know already that you won't be able to make either of these
rehearsals, let me know, and we can arrange something else.
Anyone with an interest in admin or sound would be welcome to the
auditions, too.
It sounds cruel, but I must stress at this point the most important thing;
this is a HUGE project, and we will need the full commitment of everyone
involved to make it work properly. Essentially, if you want to be involved,
we want to be able to count on you.
I hope all this isn't too intimidating! :)
If there are any questions feel free to email me and ask them. Failing
that, the sub-committee and myself look forward to meeting many of you next
Tuesday evening.
Best to all,
Anna Slack

- Missive: Film debate
The first official meeting of theis term will be this Tuesday at 8:30 in
E18 New Hall.
As the title suggests, this meeting will be devoted to an indepth
discussion of Peter Jackson's version of the Return of the King. Whether
you loved it or hated it, come along for an interesting debate.
Directions:
Enter the New Hall p'lodge and follow the corridor forwards.

- Tuesday Audition
Hello each,
For those of you planning to attend the Tuesday (tomorrow) evening
audition, here are the promised directions;
Make your way up the hill towards the hill-billy colleges; New Hall is on
the left hand side of the road, opposite the Texaco.
Enter through the main doors. You'll find yourself in the p'lodge. Just
beyong the p'lode itself you'll see many pidgeon holes lining the left hand
wall. There is a door just past the first collection of p'holes. If you go
through this you will find yourself outside, with two more doors on your
left. The second one of these is the Music Room.
If in doubt, collar the porters :)

- LOTR Audition - Feb 1st Details
Hello each,
Here, as promised, are the details for the second and final audition for
the Shire's charity reading of the Radio Version.
The audition will take place on Sunday, February 1st, from 6.30-8pm in the
Music Room, New Hall. Accurate directions for this to follow.
Can those of you who have already auditioned please come along and join
those of us who are there already from 8-8.30, so that we can give a
briefing as to what the rehearsal schedule, script handling, and on the day
plan will be.
We will also need to sort an admin crew; if any of you would like to be
involved with that, please let me know.
If you won't be able to attend the audition on Sunday, it would be useful
to know that in advance. It would also be great to know how many of you
will be there generally, so if you could send a quick email in my direction
that would be great (means we can be sure to have enough chairs and the
like).
Although we are now much closer to having scripts, we will still be
auditioning from the book itself. If you have a copy to hand, do bring it
along.
Directions for the Music Room: Enter New Hall by the front entrance, from
which the Dome glares down at you sinisterly like Minas Morgul. On your
RIGHT as you pass the p'lodge there is a sequence of pidgeon holes. Just
after the first of these is a door that leads immediately outside. If you
find yourself going up ramps or stairs or anything you have missed the
door! Take the door, and you will see two doors on your left a little way
down the path. The music room is the second of these.
Many apologies to those I confused last time by typing left and not right
at the crucial point. :)
I look forward to seeing you all there,
Best wishes to all,

- Elvish Class
Mae govannen, everyone!
I'd just like to apologise for having to reschedule the Elvish class, but I
can now announce the new details...
Time: 7pm, Tuesday 27th January
Venue: Peile 304, Newnham
This will be sort of introductory - we'll be looking at Sindarin from a
starter's point-of-view, learning a few different phrases, and most
importantly getting to speak a few bits. For those of you who are keen
linguists I'll try to explain as much as possible, but you don't need to be
linguistically-minded to come along - it will be fun for everyone.
The class is right before a CTS meeting, as regulars will know, but you
don't have to stay for that if you don't want to.
I hope some of you can come along!
Cuio vae!
Philippa
The Elvish Officer
Directions: Go to p'lodge, it's on sidgewick Ave. consult a map. Turn right
in the plodge go along corridor of longness. Get to Peile. Climb stairs.
Note, long means it takes me 5mins to walk it... but it is a good
approximation to a straight line, and deviations from the right way
generally are not possible. And yes, you do have to go past the kitchen,
unless there is formal (and I'm fairly sure there isn't) you do not need to
go up any stairs 'till you get to Peile - Peile has a door marked 'Peile
Hall' at the start of it.
Or... Peile carpark is on Grange road, just after Sidgewick ave. if you are
comming up SA or from the direction of Selwyn. Go in it, go through the
door (C23560 and turn the thing to the left), failing this go arround Peile
- face door, turn right go arround building there is a door in the middle.
Go up three flights of stairs, right and my room is on the left number 304
(says so on the door)
- directions courtesy of Helen, whose room we are invading.

This week's debate will be in P304 Newnham on Tuesday at 8:30.
The reverse of last term's Eagle debate. Which of the villians should the
Valar throw into the Outer Darkness? Which will survive? Come along to
represent a character, or come to vote your most hated character into the
Outer Darkness...
Directions:
On entering Newnham p'lodge, turn right and follow the very
long corridor (for those of you who came to the squash - it was also held
At the top of the stairs, turn right - Peile 304 is on
the left!

Tuesday's debate will be held at 8:30 in R16 Memorial Court, Clare College.
Beren and Luthien are two of Tolkien's most famous lovers. Their story is
told in short by Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings, but it is the chapter
from the Silmarillion which we will be examining. This is an excellent
introduction for those unfamiliar with the Silmarillion; and an interesting
debate for those who know and love it.
Directions: Memorial Court, Clare College is on Queen's Road. Enter, and
proceed past the Porter's Lodge. A large octagonal building is directly in
front of you. R staircase is in the far-right corner. Pass through the
doorway, up, up, up the winding stairs and through the door on the left.
R16, is the second door on the left. Speak, friend, and enter.

1/2 or French size 54. Colour is yellow. Band width is 6 mm and it weighs=20
between 6.5 and 6.9 grams. It sells as a
heavy ring. Elvish script is laser engraved. The price of the ring is =
=A3200=20

Directions: Enter Newnham's p'lodge, turn right, go down the corridor.
Continue down the corridor until every moment is weariness... Eventually

Hello Each,
A pestiferous email for you, to remind you to scribble things for Anor!
Although I haven't decided on a fixed deadline date yet for this issue's

Hello all,
As you probably know, the CTS will be holding a Read-through of The Lord of
the Rings at Borders on the second Saturday of May Week.
As the head of the on-the-day admin team, I am looking for volunteer
assistants in a variety of roles - it could be anything from looking after
the money bucket, filling in for someone's part for a while, assisting with
sound, helping me to keep an eye on everything... Whatever happens, it'll
be a fun day (and you may not be needed all day - that's negotiable) - we
might just need to meet up the odd time beforehand so we know what
everyone's doing.
Please contact me (pms45) if you're interested (even if you're already
playing something, you could well come in useful!).

Every year, Minis Tirith (the Cambridge Tolkien Society) faces an epic
battle with Taruithorn (the Oxford Tolkien Society). This year, the
Varsity Quiz will be held in Oxford on the 28th of February. We were very
close to victory last year, so we're really looking to destroy Oxford now!
We will be leaving from the Drummer Street Bus Station (probably taking the
9.20 bus, but details will be confirmed). And we should arrive back before
10/11 that evening.
The CTS is looking both for a quiz team and for a number of people to come
and support it. The team will be chosen on the day.
If you are planning to come, can you please e-mail the committee, just so
we have an idea of how many people to expect (if you don't remember to
e-mail, you will still be most welcome).

- Anor 32
Hello all,
So the student-population has remigrated to Cambridge, and that most
dreadful time of year has begun its inevitable cycle once again. You seek a
form of procrastination, anything to keep you from that question, essay, or
practical write up, which may just get done by the time that hell freezes
over...
I have the most perfect solution for you; write an article, draw a picture,
take a photo, for Anor!
I hope to get no.32 out in time for the Punt Moot and/or Reading - so the
deadline for submissions is May 31st. If you have any queries at all, or
would like to purchase/claim copies of previous Anors, don't hesitate to
get in contact with me.
You all know the drill by now. I shall disappear again :)
Best to all,
Anna Slack

- Hot off the Press - Anor 32
Greetings all,
Anor 32 has just gone to press. I will be distributing copies in the=20
following fashions: remember, if you are a member of the society, either=20
just this year or for life, you are entitled to an Anor for free. If you=20
would just like one, they cost a princely English =A31. Anyone wanting back=
=20
issues (as far back as 26), should also let me know.
1: To those involved in the reading, I can be grabbed at any rehearsal and=
=20
you may demand your Anor, at gunpoint if necessary. 2: I should be about at=
=20
the puntmoot even if I don't end up going, so you should also be able to=20
grab me there - but I wouldn't advise you shoving me in the river. Would do=
=20
the Anors no good. 3: If you won't be at either of these and want one NOW,=
=20
you can leave/send me an envelope either via the UMS or snail mail, and=20
I'll send one to you. (Anna Slack, New Hall, Cambridge, CB3 0DF) 4: You can=
=20
lazily wait until next term, then demand one, and force me to make another=
=20
print run then...
Whichever way you collect yours, I hope you enjoy it - keep writing over=20
the summer, and enjoy the end of term!
Best to all,

- A croquet match with some tiddlywinkers
Hello everyone,
We've just been reliably informed that it is traditional for the CTS to
have a croquet match with members of the Tiddlywinks Society in May Week
(apparently it is all down to a punting incident a few years ago). Drinking
Pimms is also part of the tradition. Very Cambridge!
The match will take place on the evening of Thursday 17th at Selwyn (though
precise time and location will be confirmed shortly).
So, we're looking for team members and spectators. Please e-mail the
committee (soc-tolkien-committee@lists.cam.ac.uk) if you are interested.
It promises to be a fun-filled and rather interesting occasion!

Dear all,
The year begins again: to drown our sorrows (hopefully before they begin)
and to numb ourselves against the coming term; to indulge in memories of
the age that has passed and to look forward to the one that is coming, we
cordially invite you to the ever-famous...
INNMOOT!
The innmoot will be on Tuesday 5th October (tomorrow), at the Castle Inn,
The Hill, Cambridge. Beginning at 19:00 for those that would like to order
food, and from 20:00 onwards otherwise. Anyone getting there first should
try and get our favourite table - the big one upstairs.
Some of the Committee will be at the Fresher's Fair until 19:00, so anyone
in that area is welcome to walk back to the Castle with them as they leave.

- Tolkien Society Termcard
Dear all,
Greetings to all, old and new! In this *carefully spell-checked* email
you'll find some details about this term's up-and-coming-events.
12th (Tues.), 20:30, New Hall Bar: The CTS Squash! Come along to meet the
current committee and meet everyone else involved in the society. A great
opportunity to learn more about us and our plans for this year, or to ask
questions. Food and drink will be lurking about throughout for consumption.
19th (Tues.), 20:00, Newnham College, Clough 229: If Newnham's endless
corridors don't fox you, come along for one of our favourite debates - the
Eagle Debate. The principle is simple but has a well deserved reputation
for hilarity: The fellowship are riding to Mordor on the back of an eagle
to dispose of the One Ring, peril of all Middle Earth. But the eagle is
getting tired (they're no good at bearing burdens, you know). Who is to be
thrown off first, and who will last to the end? Winners in the last few
years have included Legolas, Sam, and Boromir... Come and defend your
favourite, or just listen to the madness.
26th (Tues.), 20:00, New Hall, Bag End (Room E18): What if... Numenor
hadn't drowned?: Come and join us as we explore how the schema of
Middle-Earth might have changed. A little water never hurt anyone, after
all...
2nd Nov. (Tues), 20:00, location tbc: Gandalf: Mental or Mentor?: A
character debate on one of Tolkien's pivotal players.
9th (Tues.), 20:00, Newnham College, Clough 227 and 229: The Games Evening:
Beat the 5th week blues with a range of Tolkien themed games; Monopoly,
Risk, Tinuviel pursuit... The list is endless.
16th (Tues.), 20:00, New Hall, Bag End (E18): Eucatastrophe and Tolkien's
Works: Tolkien held that eucatastrophe was 'the highest function of fairy
story'. But what is eucatastrophe (apart from Anna's favourite word), where
did it come from, and, perhaps most importantly, does Tolkien's most famous
work achieve it? Come along and not only seek answers to this question, but
help an English student with her final dissertation...
23rd (Tues.), 20:00, location tbc: The End Goes Ever On and On: The films
were chastised for drawing out the ending; the book is sometimes considered
worse. Come to debate the last pages of The Lord of the Rings, and learn
about the alternate ending...
30th (Tues.), 20:00, Newnham College, Clough 229: Reading Evening: The
traditional wind-down to a stressful term. Bring along your favourite bits
of any of Tolkien's works to read aloud, or just come along to listen in to
others.
Also this term: The Foreyule Feast, our pre-Christmas dinner! Details to
follow.
You can keep up-to-date with all this information via our website. Enjoy!

Dear all,
This week prepare for the debate to end them all: the Eagle Debate.
The principle is simple but has a well deserved reputation for hilarity:

confusion at the merciless hands of the endless corridors...
Enter Newnham's p'lodge, turn right. Follow the corridor for a while (you
will pass the library, buttery and kitchen on your right and college hall
on your left) until you get into a red-tiled corridor. Walk down this
until you see the main staircase on your right. Go up to the second floor,
turn right and follow the corridor round until you see 229 on your left.
It's fairly well sign-posted.

- Anor: Journal of the CTS
Dear all,
Anor is the journal of the Cambridge Tolkien Society. It is published once
a term (honest!), and copies of it are stored in the UL for posterity, as
well as with the main Tolkien Society.
The editor of this august publication (ie, me), is looking for things to
fill its pages this term. So, if you feel inspired, why not have a
scribble? Past issues have included artwork, poetry, parodies, scripts,
serious articles, write-ups of debates and events held by the society,
overseas contributions, and plain silliness.
If you've an idea and want to see if its suitable, or have any other
questions about Anor, then feel free to drop me an email.
The dealine for the submission of articles for Anor 33 is midnight on the
